Record staff wins local journalism awards

Record Staff Report

The Record’s staff won six awards June 30 at the annual awards dinner of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Louisville chapter.

Competing in the non-metro community newspaper division, The Record’s work was praised by judges as comprehensive, thoughtful and engaging.

  • In minority and women’s affairs reporting, Ruby Thomas placed first for a story about a cookbook comprised of refugees’ recipes and another story on the lives of two women. The judges said, “These entries provide an engaging look at the experiences of recipes and experiences of the refugees who provided them and the life paths of two pioneering high school classmates who are now in their 90s.”
  • A series of stories on Pope Francis’ visit to the United States won first place in the continuing coverage category. The series, written by reporters Jessica Able and Ruby Thomas and editor Marnie McAllister, was praised by judges as, “Comprehensive, solid, interesting coverage related to the pope. Well done.”
  • A set of editorials by Marnie McAllister addressing the Year of Mercy, women religious and climate change also won a first-place award. The judge wrote, “Three thoughtful editorials. I appreciated your subdued, contemplative voice.”

In addition to the first-place awards, Ruby Thomas also placed second for continuing coverage and feature writing. Jessica Able took third place in feature writing.
