Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz will celebrate a Mass in honor of Our Lady of Cobre’s feast day Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. at St. Rita Church, 8709 Preston Highway.

Our Lady of Cobre, also known as Our Lady of Charity, is the patron saint of Cuba. Our Lady of Cobre was declared patroness of the Cuban people by Pope Benedict XV in 1916 and solemnly crowned in the Eucharistic congress held in Santiago de Cuba in 1936. Pope Paul VI raised her sanctuary to the category of basilica in 1977, according to a statement from the Archdiocese of Louisville Office of Multicultural Ministry organizing the feast day celebration.

Pope Francis visited the the Minor Basilica of the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity in El Cobre, Cuba during his 2015 trip to the island nation.
