New pastors, administrators appointed at 19 parishes

Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz has made the following appointments, effective June 19, 2019, unless otherwise noted:

Pastors:
Rev. William P. Burks is to be pastor of St. Lawrence. This assignment will coincide with the termination of Father Burk’s assignment as pastor of St. John Paul II Church.
Father Burks, born in Louisville, studied at St. Meinrad Seminary, St. Meinrad, Ind. He was ordained on May 24, 1986.
Father Burks has served as pastor of St. John Paul II (formerly St. Pius X and St. Barnabas) since June 20, 2007. He has also served as pastor of St. Polycarp Church. Since his ordination, Father Burks also has been assigned to the following parishes: Incarnation, St. Barnabas, St. John Paul II, St. Margaret Mary and St. Pius X. He has also been a chaplain at Holy Rosary Academy and currently at Holy Cross High School.

Rev. David A. Cockson is to be pastor of St. William Church while continuing as pastor of St. Ignatius Martyr Church.
Father Cockson, born in Grand Island, Neb., studied at Sacred Heart School of Theology, Hales Corners, Wisc. He was ordained on May 31, 2014.
Father Cockson has served as pastor of St. Ignatius Martyr since June 22, 2016. Since his ordination, Father Cockson also has been assigned to the following parishes: Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral, Bardstown; St. Michael, Fairfield, Ky.; Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Campbellsville,Ky.; Our Lady of the Hills, Finley, Ky.; and Our Lady of Fatima, Phillipsburg, Ky. He also serves as chaplain of SS. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital.

Rev. Peter Q. Do is to be pastor of St. John Paul II while continuing as associate vocation director, Vocation Office, Archdiocese of Louisville. This assignment coincides with the termination of Father Do’s assignment as pastor of St. Gregory Church in Samuels, Ky.
Father Do, born in Saigon, Vietnam, studied at Mundelein Seminary, Mundelein, Ill. He was ordained on June 8, 2002.
Father Do has served as pastor of St. Gregory since June 22, 2016. He has also served as pastor of St. Ignatius and St. Bartholomew churches. Since his ordination, Father Do also has been assigned to the following parishes: St. Christopher in Radcliff, Ky.; St. James in Elizabethtown, Ky.; and St. Monica in Bardstown, Ky. He also serves as associate vocation director.

Rev. Philip L. Erickson is to be pastor of Our Mother of Sorrows Church, St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church and St. Therese of Lisieux Church. This assignment coincides with the termination of Father Erickson’s assignment as pastor of St. Thomas More and Our Lady of Mount Carmel churches.
Father Erickson, born in Louisville, studied at St. Meinrad Seminary in St. Meinrad, Ind. He was ordained on May 27, 1995.
Father Erickson has served as pastor of St. Thomas More since June 16, 2004, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church since Sept. 1, 2006. Since his ordination, Father Erickson also has been assigned to the following parishes: St. John the Apostle, Brandenburg, Ky., and St. Raphael. He has also served as an adjutant judicial vicar for the Metropolitan Tribunal, Archdiocese of Louisville.

Rev. Peter Fegan, O.P. is to be pastor of St. Louis Bertrand Church effective June 14, 2019. He replaces Father Edward Gorman, O.P.
Father Fegan was ordained in 2001. He served as a parochial vicar of St. Patrick Church, Columbus, Ohio, and St. Dominic Church, Youngstown, Ohio. In 2012, he was appointed parochial vicar at St. Louis Bertrand. In 2013, he was appointed pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Zanesville, Ohio, and served there until the parish was returned to the diocese in 2017. For the last several months, Father Fegan has been assigned to St. John Vianney Seminary in Denver, Colo. While there, he served as assistant theology professor and house formator. He studied for his doctorate and wanted to have an opportunity to teach following his pastoral service in Zanesville.

Rev. Maurice C. Hayes, O.F.M. Conv. is to be pastor of St. Teresa of Calcutta Church in Fairdale, Ky., while continuing as pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.
Father Hayes, born in Sunfish, Ky., studied at Mount St. Francis, Mount St. Francis, Ind.; Our Lady of Consolation, Carey, Ohio; and Assumption Seminary, Chaska, Minn. He was ordained on Jan. 4, 1969.
Father Hayes has served as the pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton since July 1, 2014. He previously served as pastor of St. Paul Church.

 

 

Rev. Steven D. Henriksen is to be pastor of St. Michael Church. This assignment coincides with the termination of Father Henriksen’s assignment as pastor of Church of the Ascension.
Father Henriksen, born in Clarinda, Iowa, studied at Sacred Heart School of Theology. He was ordained on Feb. 2, 2013.
Father Henriksen has served as the pastor of Ascension since June 18, 2015. Since his ordination, Father Henriksen also has been assigned to Holy Trinity Church.

 

 

Rev. J. Randall Hubbard is to be pastor of St. Martin de Porres Church while continuing as pastor of the Church of the Epiphany.
Father Hubbard, born in Elizabethtown, Ky., studied at St. Meinrad Seminary, St. Meinrad, Ind. He was ordained on June 2, 1990.
Father Hubbard has served as the pastor of Epiphany since June 22, 2011. Since his ordination, Father Hubbard also has been assigned to the following parishes: St. Helen, Holy Spirit, St. James in Elizabethtown, St. Raphael and St. Stephen Martyr. He is also chaplain for the Deaf Community and was co-chaplain of Sacred Heart Academy.

 

Rev. Brian A. Kenney is to be pastor of St. Thomas More Church and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. This assignment will coincide with the termination of Father Kenney’s assignment as pastor of St. Aloysius Church in Shepherdsville, Ky., and St. Benedict Church in Lebanon Junction, Ky.
Father Kenney, born in Louisville, studied at St. Meinrad Seminary, St. Meinrad, Ind. He was ordained on June 8, 2002.
Father Kenney has served as the pastor of St. Aloysius and St. Benedict since June 16, 2010. Since his ordination, Father Kenney also has been assigned to the following parishes: the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown; St. Margaret Mary; Our Lady of Mount Carmel; St. Charles in St. Mary, Ky.; and St. Augustine in Lebanon, Ky. He has also served as co-chaplain for Sacred Heart Academy.

Rev. Terry L. Langford is to be pastor of St. Aloysius Church, Shepherdsville, Ky., and St. Benedict, Lebanon Junction, Ky.
Father Langford, born in Jeffersonville, Ind., studied at University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, Ill. He was ordained on May 25, 1996.
Father Langford’s most recent assignment was chaplain at the Veterans Administration, Tampa, Fla., since Dec. 7, 2014. He has also served as the pastor of St. Lawrence and Our Mother of Sorrows churches. Since his ordination, Father Langford has been assigned to the following parishes: Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown, St. Raphael and St. Aloysius, Pewee Valley, Ky. He has also served as chaplain at the Veteran’s Administration in Danville, Ill., St. Cloud, Minn., and for the Palliative Care Unit at the Bronx VA Medical Center.

Rev. Christopher S. Rhodes is to be pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, St. Augustine Church and Christ the King Church. This assignment will coincide with the termination of Father Rhodes’ assignment as pastor of Our Mother of Sorrows, St. Elizabeth of Hungary and St. Therese of Lisieux churches.
Father Rhodes, born in Dallas, Texas, studied at St. Meinrad Seminary, St. Meinrad, Ind., and Catholic University, Washington, D.C. He was ordained on May 26, 2012.
Father Rhodes served as pastor of Our Mother of Sorrows, St. Elizabeth of Hungary and St. Therese of Lisieux since June 21, 2017.
Since his ordination, Father Rhodes also has been assigned to the following parishes: St. Augustine in Lebanon; the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown; Holy Name of Mary in Calvary, Ky., St. Michael in Fairfield, Ky., and St. Patrick.

Rev. Charles D. Walker is to be pastor of St. Bernard. This assignment will coincide with the termination of Father Walker’s assignment as pastor of St. Augustine, Christ the King, Good Shepherd, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Martin de Porres churches.
Father Walker was born in Loretto, Ky., and studied at St. Meinrad Seminary, St. Meinrad, Ind. Father Walker was ordained on May 30, 1981.
Father Walker has served as the pastor of St. Augustine, Christ the King, Good Shepherd, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Martin de Porrres since June 20, 2018. He has also served as pastor of St. Ambrose, Cecilia, Ky.; St. Clement; Emmanuel, Albany, Ky.; Holy Cross, Burkesville, Ky.; St. James, Elizabethtown, Ky.; St. Ignatius, White Mills, Ky.; St Peter the Apostle and St. Pius X.
Since his ordination, Father Walker also has been assigned to the following parishes: SS. Peter and Paul, Danville, Ky.; St. Polycarp and St. Raphael. He has also served as chaplain for Catholic Campus Ministry at the University of Louisville and co-chaplain for Mercy Academy.

Administrators:
Rev. Adam B. Carrico is to be administrator of the Church of the Ascension. This assignment will coincide with the termination of Father Carrico’s assignment as associate pastor of St. Patrick and St. Boniface.
Father Carrico, born in Louisville, studied at St. Meinrad in St. Meinrad, Ind. He was ordained Dec. 19, 2015.
Since ordination, he also has served at St. Gabriel Church.

 

 

 

Rev. David J. Farrell is to be administrator of St. Dominic Church in Springfield, Ky. This assignment will coincide with the termination of Father Farrell’s assignment as associate pastor of St. Augustine, Lebanon, and Holy Name of Mary, Calvary.
Father Farrell, born in Elizabethtown, Ky., studied at St. Meinrad, St. Meinrad, Ind. He was ordained May 26, 2018.

 

 

 

Rev. Kien Nguyen is to be administrator of St. Gregory Church in Samuels, Ky. This assignment will coincide with the termination of Father Nguyen’s assignment as associate pastor of Holy Trinity and Holy Name churches.
Father Nguyen, born in Vietnam, studied at St. Meinrad Seminary, St. Meinrad, Ind. He was ordained May 26, 2018.

 

 

 

 

Rev. Deogratias Ssamba, A.J. is to be administrator of Good Shepherd Church. This assignment will coincide with the termination of Father Ssamba’s assignment as associate pastor of St. Augustine, Christ the King, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Martin de Porres churches.
Father Ssamba, born in Ggangu, Uganda, studied at AJ Scholasticate, Langata, Nairobi, Kenya. He was ordained on Aug. 21, 2010.
Father Ssamba also has been assigned previously to St. Peter the Apostle Church.

 

 

Archbishop Kurtz has also made the following appointments, effective June 19, 2019, unless otherwise noted:

Rev. Robert D. Barnell is to be associate pastor of St. Augustine Church in Lebanon, Ky., and Holy Name of Mary Church in Calvary, Ky. This assignment will coincide with the termination of Father Barnell’s assignment as associate pastor of St. Bartholomew Church.

Rev. Gerald L. Bell will serve as vicar for senior priests in Archdiocese of Louisville.

Ms. Sharan Benton will retire as pastoral administrator of St. William Church.

Rev. Benedict J. Brown is re-appointed as administrator of St. Ambrose Church in Cecilia, Ky., and St. Ignatius Church in White Mills, Ky., along with the care of St. Clare Oratory in Colesburg, Ky.

Rev. John R. Burke will retire as sacramental moderator of St. William Church.

Deacon Lucio A. Caruso is to be deacon of St. William Church while continuing as deacon of St. Ignatius Martyr.

Rev. Mr. Anthony L. Cecil, Jr., who will be ordained to the priesthood on May 25, 2019, to be associate pastor of Church of the Epiphany and St. Martin de Porres Church.

Rev. Anthony L. Chandler will serve as vocation director for the Archdiocese of Louisville while continuing as pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in La Grange, Ky.

Rev. R. Dale Cieslik is to be presbyteral moderator of St. Gregory Church in Samuels, Ky., for a period of one year while continuing as pastor of St. Francis Xavier Church in Mt. Washington, Ky., and as archivist for the Archdiocese of Louisville.

Rev. Patrick J. Dolan will retire as pastor of St. Teresa of Calcutta Church in Fairdale, Ky.

Rev. Trumie C. “Pepper” Elliott will retire as administrator of St. Dominic Church in Springfield, Ky.

Rev. L. Wilfredo Fernandez was appointed pastor of Christ the Healer Church, Edmonton, Ky., and Christ the King Church, Tompkinsville, Ky., effective Jan. 1, 2019.

Rev. Juan Gómez was appointed associate pastor of St. Peter the Apostle Church, effective upon his arrival from Mexico, March 25, 2019, through June 19, 2019. As of June 19, he will be associate pastor of St. Bartholomew Church and will also serve in Hispanic ministry at St. Edward and St. Peter the Apostle churches.

Rev. Richard Goodin, O.F.M., to be associate pastor of Holy Trinity Church and Holy Name Church. This assignment will coincide with the termination of Father Goodin’s assignment at St. Patrick and St. Boniface churches.

Rev. Mark M. Hamilton is to be presbyteral moderator of St. Dominic Church in Springfield, Ky.

This assignment will coincide with his responsibilities as pastor of St. Augustine Church in Lebanon, Ky., and Holy Name of Mary Church in Calvary, Ky., and Ecumenical and Interfaith Officer, Archdiocese of Louisville.

Rev. Michael C. Martin was appointed pastor of Holy Trinity Church, Fredericktown, Ky., and Holy Rosary Church, Manton, Ky., effective Jan. 1, 2019.

Rev. José J. Márquez was appointed associate pastor of Church of the Annunciation effective upon his arrival from Mexico, March 25, 2019. Father Márquez will also serve in Hispanic ministry at the Church of the Epiphany and Immaculate Conception Church in La Grange, Ky.

Rev. Isaac S. McDaniel will retire as of June 2019.

Rev. Benni Pengiparambil, C.M.I., to be associate pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and St. Teresa of Calcutta Church in Fairdale, Ky., upon his arrival to the United States from India.

Rev. Mr. Steven Reeves, who will be ordained to the priesthood on May 25, 2019, to be associate pastor of St. Boniface Church and St. Patrick Church.

Rev. Mr. Kirby Rust, who will be ordained to the priesthood on May 25, 2019, to be associate pastor of St. James Church in Elizabethtown, Ky.

Rev. M. Casey Sanders will pursue graduate studies at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. in August 2019, which will coincide with the termination of his assignment as associate pastor of St. James Church in Elizabethtown, Ky.

Rev. T. Anthony Smith will retire as pastor of St. Lawrence Church.

Rev. J. Roy Stiles will end his assignment as vicar for senior priests, Archdiocese of Louisville.

Rev. Robert L. Stuempel will retire as pastor of St. Bernard Church.

Rev. J. Richard Sullivan will retire as administrator of St. Michael Church.

Rev. Seejo Thandiackal, C.M.I. was appointed pastor of St. Martha, Louisville, effective Jan. 1, 2019.

Deacon James R. Turner will continue to minister as deacon of St. Martin de Porres Church. This assignment will coincide with the termination of responsibilities as deacon of St. Augustine, Good Shepherd, Immaculate Heart of Mary and Christ the King churches.

Rev. Michael T. Wimsatt will end his responsibilities as vocation director, Archdiocese of Louisville.
