Workers at the Bright Foundry on Frankfort Avenue poured molten bronze July 7 into ceramic shells, one of the steps in creating a statue of Mother Catherine Spalding.
The statue will be installed outside the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 S. 5th St., after the noon Mass on July 26. It is the first statue of a woman to be placed on public ground in Louisville.
Mother Catherine, a foundress of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, established the first private hospital in Louisville as well as the first social service agency for children in Kentucky.
Many educational institutions were created under her leadership, including Presentation Academy and Spalding College, now Spalding University.
