Holy Cross students offer service around the area

HolyCrossHigh-wHoly Cross High School seniors have spent the past eight months serving the community as part of the school’s Senior Service Capstone Program. Each student partnered with a local non-profit group to gain “real-world knowledge of the importance of giving back.” Following are some examples of their work:

Karena Cash wrote a mock bill addressing “school stability for children in foster care.” The bill was filed by Senator Dan Seum as Senate Bill 190 and passed in the Senate March 1.

Roderick Cruthird volunteered at Harbor House of Louisville helping to provide activities, such as arts and crafts, for disabled individuals served by the center.

Laura Moran handed out flyers to educate people about the work of Norton Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which treats premature babies.

Seth Jones worked with autistic students at Pitt Academy. Jones created a pen pal program to foster friendship between these students and students at Holy Cross.

Jacob Gagel worked with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to learn more about suicide. Gagel also helped raise awareness in the community about suicide and of the programs offered by AFSP.

Kaylee Thornsberry collected lego blocks for the Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Program at Nativity Academy at St. Boniface.

Ashley Cook volunteered with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society — Kentucky Southeast Indiana Chapter helping to create community awareness of the disease. She also organized an event for new members of the society.

Sydney Blandford volunteered with Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation to learn more about pollution. Blandford sponsored a social media contest asking people in the community to share pictures of the ways they are helping to care for the environment.

Garrett Hawkins volunteered at Boys and Girls Haven, where he helped to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect and the programs the center offers.

Cameron Dwyer taught swimming lessons through the YMCA. He also passed out flyers and used social media to let people know about the programs offered by the YMCA.
