Historical marker recognizing St. Vincent Orphanage to be dedicated

The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) will dedicate a new historical marker Oct. 4 at the spot where St. Vincent Orphanage and Infirmary once stood.

The ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. at 1006 E. Jefferson St. in downtown Louisville.

St. Vincent was started by Mother Catherine Spalding, co-founder of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, in 1836 to care for sick and abandoned children according to a statement from the KHS.

One side of the marker — which is sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth — will tell the story of Mother Catherine and her work in Louisville. The other side of the marker will tell the history of St. Vincent.
