Most Blessed Sacrament Church’s former school was dedicated and blessed last week to fulfill its new mission to provide safe and affordable housing for senior citizens.
The Most Blessed Sacrament Senior Apartments features 30 one-bedroom units, which are available to low-income senior citizens age 62 and older. Their rent is subsidized and tenants will not pay more than 30 percent of their income in rent.
The building, at Taylor and Berry boulevards in South Louisville, also will house the Community Resource Center, which will provide services to senior citizens, according to a press release provided by Catholic Charities of Louisville.
Catholic Charities worked with the Housing Partnership Inc., the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development and other agencies to fund the $7.2 million project.
The former school was built in 1938 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, according to the release. The building now has solar panels, which are expected to generate enough power for the common areas, and meets LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards, the release said.
The parish school closed in 2005 to form a regional school, St. Nicholas Academy, along with Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St. Thomas More and Sts. Simon and Jude schools.
