Father Griner, a former pastor and Vocation Office director, dies at 84

Father William S. Griner, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Louisville, died Feb. 26 at the age of 84.

Father Griner, a native of Louisville, was ordained a priest May 27, 1961. He attended St. Mary Seminary in St. Mary, Ky., and St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Ind.

Father Griner served as pastor of St. Michael Church, the Church of the Epiphany and the former St. Pius X Church.

He also served as administrator pro-tempore at Mother of Good Counsel and the former St. Barnabas churches.

He was associate pastor of St. Margaret Mary, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Cathedral of the Assumption and St. Barnabas.

He also served as a teacher at St. Thomas Seminary and Trinity High School.

Father Griner served the archdiocese in a variety of ways. He was director of the Vocations Office, the Office of Worship and Continuing Education for Clergy.

He was a member of the Liturgical Commission of the Archdiocese. And he was a consultor for the Priests’ Council.

Visitation will be March 1 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Highland’s Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, and March 2 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Epiphany.

The concelebrated Funeral Mass will be March 2 at 11 a.m. at Epiphany.

Burial will be in the priests’ section at Calvary Cemetery. A bereavement meal will follow.
