Events set for ‘Respect Life Month’

Several events are planned in the Archdiocese of Louisville in October to mark Respect Life Month.

  • St. Stephen Martyr Church, located at Pindell Avenue and Hess Lane, will host a program Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. featuring Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, Sharon Schuhmann, the archdiocesan pro-life coordinator, and Maureen Larison from the Office of Lifelong Formation and Education.

They will offer the second session of a four-part series designed to educate parish ministers, catechists and other interested Catholics about issues related to the dignity of life. The Oct. 2 presentation on “Witnessing to the Dignity of Life” will focus on how these issues affect families.

Schuhmann said she will pose the question, for example, “How do you look at end of life issues through the lens of your faith?”

She also plans to discuss a range of reproductive issues and pornography, among other topics.

“These are very personal issues. It’s very complex,” she noted. But added, “We live in the world and these issues affect our families. How do we deal with these issues in our families from a faith perspective?”

  • On Oct. 3 and 7, St. Patrick Church, 1000 N. Beckley Station Road, will host two Respect Life programs.

The first, Oct. 3, will feature the archbishop at 6:30 p.m. in the church. He is expected to speak about “Affirming the Culture of Life.” Prior to his talk and afterward, representatives from a variety of pro-life organizations will share information about their work.

The program Oct. 7 will include presentations from three local pro-life organizations and John Morales, a filmmaker who is making a documentary called “40” and will be released in 2013 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision.

This presentation will not be appropriate for children. Childcare for walkers through age 3 will be provided and a program for children in kindergarten through fifth-grade will be offered by college students who have been trained by Totus Tuus Ministries. Pre-registration by Sept. 26 is required for these programs for children.

Those planning to attend either program are asked to RSVP. To RSVP or pre-register children, call 244-6083 or send an email to mmcnally@stpatrick-lou.org.

  • The quarterly meeting of Life Connections, a networking group for anyone involved in pro-life ministry, is set for Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at Flaget Center, 1935 Lewiston Drive. The meeting will include prayer and time for attendees to share updates about their work in the community and in parishes.
