Center for Interfaith Relations will mark centenary of Thomas Merton

The Center for Interfaith Relations will present a celebration Jan. 31 to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Trappist monk Thomas Merton. The celebration will be held at the W. L. Lyons Brown Theatre, 315 W. Broadway at noon.

The event will include remarks from Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and a free screening of “The Many Storeys and Last Days of Thomas Merton.” The film is the latest effort of Morgan Atkinson, a Louisville native who also created “Soul Searching: The Journey of Thomas Merton” in 2006.

The Center for Interfaith Relations said in a press release that the event also will include a “major announcement” about this year’s Festival of Faiths. The annual interfaith event is set for May 12 to 17 and this year’s theme is “Sacred Journeys and the Legacy of Thomas Merton.”

The Jan. 31 celebration is free, but reservations should be made by sending an email to info@interfaithrelations.org. Donations will be accepted and these will be shared between the center and Neighborhood House, a community organization in the Portland area.
