Carmelite extern Sister Mary of Jesus dies at 91

Discalced Carmelite Sister Mary of Jesus (born Marie Agnes Lee) died on Nov. 10 at Nazareth Home, where she lived for the last two years. She was 91.

Sister Mary of Jesus served as extern sister of the Discalced Carmelite Monastery of Mary Immaculate and St. Joseph on Newburg Road, which closed in late 2015.

She was a native of Indianapolis and made her profession of vows as an extern sister in 1958. For 50  years she served as the public face of Carmel, greeting visitors and caring for the outside needs of the monastery.

She is survived by her Carmelite sisters and several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Nov. 15 in the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel. Burial was in the cemetery at the former monastery.
