Spalding to commission a sculpture of foundress

Spalding University is in the process of commissioning an artist to create a sculpture honoring its namesake, Mother Catherine Spalding, foundress of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

The sculpture will be located in the Mother Catherine Spalding Square at Third and Breckinridge streets in downtown Louisville.

The university has narrowed its search for an artist to sculptors Margo Sawyer and Janet Zweig and an as-yet unnamed third candidate. Each artist is to give a public lecture.
Sawyer’s was presented on Feb. 18. Zweig, who hails from Brooklyn, will speak on March 23 at 4:30 p.m. in the university’s Egan Leadership Center, 901 S. Fourth St. The final lecture will be presented in April.

Spalding University was established by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
