Boy Scout Troop 17 will celebrate 80th anniversary

Charlie Hulsman, Bill Spencer and others who have helped to organize the 80th anniversary celebration for Boy Scouts of America Troop 17 are hoping a large crowd of former scouts, scoutmasters or just interested folks, will turn out for the event on July 19.

Troop 17 is located at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 1020 E. Burnett Ave., and according to Hulsman, the troop is the oldest continuously registered Catholic Scout troop in the Archdiocese of Louisville.

In a brief recent telephone conversation, Hulsman noted that 80 years of history will produce a lot of memories for a lot of people — “I think it will be an enjoyable event for lots of people and for lots of reasons,” he added.

The event’s activities will begin at 4 p.m. with a Mass at the church, followed by movies, pictures — “and lots of memories,” Hulsman said. There will also be refreshments in the school cafeteria, and the event will last until 8 p.m.

In a news release prepared by Hulsman and Spencer, those “connected with Troop 17 in any way” are invited to the event and “to share Scouting’s past.”

The troop, the release noted, has had “15 Scoutmasters, hundreds of adult leaders, and more than 1,000 young men” who’ve been a part of Troop 17’s history. The troop is currently working to develop its 50th Eagle Scout, the release said.

There is no charge for the event, and people wanting more information can call Hulsman at 361-9813 or Spencer at 637-8649.
