Bellarmine’s Merton centennial celebration continues Nov. 9

A free lecture, “Merton’s Yoga: Reflections on the Book He Might Have Written,” will be presented on Nov. 9 by Jesuit Father Francis X Clooney at 7 p.m. at Bellarmine University, 2001 Newburg Road, in Wyatt Hall’s Cralle Theatre.

Father Clooney is the Parkman Professor of Divinity and director of the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University.
Bellarmine’s Father George Kilcourse said in an announcement about the event, “Pope Francis’ recent tribute to Thomas Merton in his September address to the U.S. Congress recognized our Kentucky Cistercian monk as a model for American spirituality.

“ ‘Merton was above all a man of prayer, a thinker who challenged the certitudes of his time and opened new horizons for souls and for the church. He was also a man of dialogue,’ emphasized Pope Francis, ‘a promoter of peace between peoples and religions,’ ” Father Kilcourse noted. “Father Clooney’s lecture is a timely analysis of that effort.”
