African American leadership awards will be held March 7

The 28th annual African American Leadership Awards Banquet — sponsored by the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry (OMM) — will take place March 7 at the Hyatt Regency Louisville, 311 South Fourth St.

Father Christopher S. Rhodes, associate pastor of St. Patrick Church, will deliver the keynote address.

A news release from the OMM said, “The purpose of the banquet is to recognize African American Catholic youth and adult leadership in our community.”

Twelve adults will be honored during the event. They will receive African American Leadership Awards.

They are Dillard Baker Jr., Debra F. Bullock, Peggy Maddox and JoAnn Orr of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church; John Evans, Kim Telesford-Mapp and Tianna Barnes-Palmer of St. Martin de Porres Church; Shawna Hazelwood of Holy Rosary Church in Springfield, Ky.; Ruby Hyde of St. Louis Bertrand Church; Carmen Weathers-Washington of Christ the King Church; Debra Williams of St. Monica Church in Bardstown, Ky.; and Velma Yocum of St. Augustine Church.

Six young people will receive Rodriq McCravy Awards, which grant scholarship money for recipients to use for high school and college.

The recipients of the high school scholarship awards are Alexis Cammack and Brysen Little of St. Augustine.

The recipients of the college scholarship awards are Terrence Isaiah Churchill and Jazzlin Linton of Holy Rosary; Ashley Henry of St. Martin de Porres and Brandee King of Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The recipients of the Acacia Award and the Genevieve Boone Award have not yet been announced.

The event will feature a silent auction starting at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner and program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 and should be purchased in advance by calling the OMM at 636-0296, ext. 1245.
