The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth will host a Watershed Watch workshop on July 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Watershed Watch is a program to train volunteer “citizen scientists” to monitor water quality in creeks and rivers throughout Kentucky, a news release from the SCNs said. Volunteers will be given test kits to measure pH levels, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, bacteria and temperature at stream sites near them. Other opportunities for Watershed Watch volunteers include planting native trees, shrubs, grasses and forbs along streams. Children ages 10-17 may participate in the training to become a Watershed Watch volunteer if partnered with an adult.
The SCN’s mission includes “caring for the Earth,” the release noted. This includes caring for water quality. The community, based in Nazareth, Ky., has reduced mowing on their campus and planted trees and bushes to restore the “vegetative buffer” that filters pollutants from reaching nearby lakes and streams, according to the release.
