Sister Marie Flowers, SCN, an advocate for children, dies at 50

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Marie Flowers died Oct. 14 at Nazareth Home. She was 50 years old.

Sister Flowers, a native of Detroit, professed perpetual vows as an SCN just over a year ago, on June 11, 2016, having professed her first vows two years earlier. She was diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer in January of 2016.

Though her time as a religious was short, she spent much of her life in service to others, serving primarily as a social worker and advocating for children. She served as a case coordinator for NECCO Foster Care and as a Court Appointed Special Advocate since 2014. She served as a patient care coordinator for MD2U from 2011 to 2012.

She also served homeless families and youth in Pennsylvania and Florida. 

She is survived by her parents, Michael and Ellen Finan Flowers of St. Louis; brother Mike Flowers of Ft. Lauderdale and sister Patty Adlabi of Manchester, Mo.; nieces, nephews and her religious community.

The visitation will begin at  Epiphany Church, 914 Old Harrod’s Creek Road, on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. It will include time for sharing and prayer from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Visitation will continue at 9 a.m. on Oct. 21 at St. Vincent Church in Nazareth, Ky., and will include time for sharing at 9:30 a.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Oct. 21 at 10:30 a.m., followed by burial in Nazareth Cemetery.
