Youth who take part in religious education programs at All Saints Church in Taylorsville, Ky., participated in the parish’s second annual Cardboard Charity Campout March 25 at the church. The event, which aimed to raise awareness about homelessness, also raised more than $2,000 for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Participants also collected hundreds of items, including toiletries, blankets, scarves and kitchen wares — all of which will be donated to Signature Healthcare, the Louisville VA Medical Center and Simon House, a center in Frankfort, Ky., that helps needy mothers and children.

The event was meant to simulate the experience of a homeless person. The youth heard from John Curry — who does street outreach for Family Health Centers which operates a clinic for the homeless — about his experiences working with homeless individuals.

The youth prayed the rosary and spent the night sleeping in cardboard boxes inside the church.
