Bellarmine to hold Merton lecture series

As part of Bellarmine University’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, the Thomas Merton Center’s fall lecture series will explore some of the connections between Merton and the council. The lectures in the series are free and open to the public. The series schedule is:

  • Oct. 9 — Michael W. Higgins will speak on “Thomas Merton and Pope John XXIII.”
  • Oct. 16 — Bonnie Thurston will explore “Thomas Merton, Vatican II and Women Religious.”
  • Oct. 30 — Edward Kaplan will speak on “Vulnerable Prophets: Thomas Merton, Abraham Joshua Heschel and Vatican II.”
  • Nov. 6 — The series will conclude with a lecture by Anthony Padovano titled “The Impact of Thomas Merton and Vatican II on the Church.”

The lectures will be presented in Hilary’s in Bellarmine’s Horrigan Hall beginning at 7 p.m. on each night of the series.
