Youth Events — March 22

Students to welcome a visiting artist

Eighth-grade students from Our Lady of Lourdes School will welcome a visiting artist for four workshop sessions March 21, 23, 28 and 30. During these four sessions, local artist Janet Britt will work with the students to create wood sculptures. Each student will draw an endangered animal on a piece of wood, and Britt will cut the animals out of the wood and attach to a base. Students will paint the animals and also share, if time allows, research on the animal and why it is endangered. This workshop will combine art, science and environmental themes and is made possible by a grant from PNC/Fund for the Arts Teacher Arts Grant.

Speech event

Assumption High School’s speech team will host “Spotlight Night” at the school’s Humana Performing and Fine Arts Center, 2170 Tyler Lane, March 30 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event will feature performances from members and is free to the public. Donations will  help speech team members and their families pay for the Catholic Forensic League’s National Tournament in Baltimore, Md., this spring.

Geography bee

Sabrina Daisey, a student at St. Bernard School, is one of 100 finalists who qualified to participate in the 2012 Kentucky Geography Bee, which will be held at the Knicely Economic Center at Western Kentucky University March 30.

Shoe donation

Fifth- and seventh-grade students from St. Leonard School visited EDGE Outreach March 16 as part of a student service project to collect shoes. The students collected more than 700 pounds of shoes. EDGE uses money received for these shoes to provide clean, safe water around the world.

Breakfast

Each day from 7:10 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. for the rest of the school year, Ascension School’s custodian, Jim Grider, will sell special breakfast items to families and students in order to raise funds for tornado victims. These items will include scrambled eggs, hash browns and fruit. Funds raised will be added to Ascension Church’s efforts to support areas hit by the tornadoes in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. For more information, contact Mary Jo Ellis, Ascension principal, at 451-2535.

Trinity champs

Trinity High School will host an assembly at 8 a.m. March 23 in the Steinhauser Gymnasium on the school’s Shelbyville Road campus in honor of Trinity’s 2012 Kentucky State Basketball Tournament championship team.
The team finished the season with a 35-3 record and won the school’s first state title in basketball. Trinity had also won the state 6A state football championship, making it the first school in Kentucky High School Athletic Association history to win both football and basketball championships in the same year.
