Mayor’s scholars
Nine students who attend high schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville were among the 48 students recognized by Mayor Greg Fischer as recipients of the annual Mayor’s Outstanding High School Seniors Award.
The young people honored are those who have excelled in and out of the classroom, a news release from the mayor’s office said.
The following students were recognized at Louisville Metro Hall May 20.
Nathan Bearden, Holy Cross High School; Greg Bryan, Bethlehem High School; Rachel French, Mercy Academy; Austin Goss, St. Xavier High School; Colleen Hess, Assumption High School; Kenny Nauert, DeSales High School; Jordan Pamplin, Sacred Heart Academy; Daniel Ryan, Trinity High School; and Rebecca Sauer, Presentation Academy.
Kindergarten fun
Kindergarten Countdown, a series of events for students entering kindergarten, will be hosted at various locations in Louisville this summer. Children entering kindergarten will receive a free Kindergarten Countdown t-shirt and book. One child and an accompanying adult get in to each event at no charge. Stop by any Louisville Free Public Library June 1 or after to register for the program..
The first event will be June 7 at 10 a.m. at the Louisville Free Public Library, 301 York Street, and will feature StageOne Family Theatre. The next event will be June 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Frazier History Museum, 829 W. Main Street.
State champs
- The St. Xavier High School tennis team claimed its sixth consecutive Kentucky High School Athletic Association state championship, and the program’s 23rd overall. Junior Brandon Lancaster won the singles championship and the doubles team of junior Nick Waldeck and sophomore Matt Graft earned the doubles state championship.
- St. X’s lacrosse team captured the Kentucky Scholastic Lacrosse League championship, defeating Trinity High School in the final game. It was the program’s sixth title in seven years. The lacrosse team was undefeated against Kentucky opponents this season.
- St. X’s rugby team won the Kentucky High School Rugby League championship, defeating Trinity in the final game. It’s the program’s third consecutive title in the league’s four-year existence.
Journalism award
Two students at Trinity High School took home three awards in the Kentucky High School Journalism Association’s competition. Editor-in-chief Jake Smith placed third in feature writing and third in sports writing. Sophomore Forde Womack, one of the editors-in-chief for next school year, placed second in newspaper photography.
Box top winner
St. Aloysius School in Pewee Valley, Ky., was one of 16 schools across the nation to be chose as a General Mills Box Top Winner.

rincipal Maryann Hayslip received a $5,000 check made out to the school. School leaders say they have “allocated the funds to upgrade technology, purchase much-needed items from Smartboards to saxophones, improve playground and physical education equipment and to cover fees for student competitions among other items,” a news release from the school said.
All-American
- Brandon Lancaster, a junior at St. Xavier High School, has been named a National High School Tennis All-American by the National High School Tennis All-American Foundation. Lancaster is one of the 40 boys in the country to receive this honor.
- Seven members of the St. X swimming and diving team were selected to the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America, Inc. All-America Team. These academic All-Americans are: Christian Bush, Tucker Creger, Clayton Hoehler, Daniel James, Hunter O’Brien, David Rubenstein and Jacob Smith.
In addition, the varsity swimming and diving team has also been awarded the Silver Scholar Team Award from NISCA for having an average grade point average of 3.676 this year.
POWR program
Sixth-grade students at St. Agnes School recently toured Catholic Charities’ St. Anthony campus. The students also presented the Migration and Refugee Services program with 22 welcome baskets filled with personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies and paper products.
These care packages will be given to new and future refugee families. St. Agnes worked in conjunction with the Parishes Organized to Welcome Refugee (POWR) program.
Art competition
Calyn Hutt, a sophomore at Presentation Academy, was chosen as the winner of the Community Choice Award in the annual Congressional Art Competition, hosted by members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Her photograph, titled “Words to Read in a Room to Think,” will hang on display in Rep. John Yarmuth’s local office in Louisville.
