National service award
Trinity High School junior Blake Burger recently received the President’s Volunteer Service Award from President Barack Obama.
Burger has provided more than 100 service hours to the community through Headstrong Louisville, a group he founded. Burger also volunteered his family’s home to an international student who would be returned to his home country if he couldn’t find a place to live. Since October, Burger has been responsible for the international student’s morning transportation and has shared American culture with him.
He also has taught students from Ghana how to swim and has worked building homes for church missions.
Leadership award
Catherine Kosse, a senior at Sacred Heart Academy, has been selected to receive a $1,000 National Association of Secondary Schools Principals (NASSP)/Herff Jones Principal’s Leadership Award scholarship. High school principals were invited to nominate a student on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience and academic record.
Green team
Mercy Academy’s club, the Green Team, recently won a $500 award for a recycling program club members initiated at the school. Officers of the Green Team are: Catie Flaugher, Courtney Ryan and Hannah Costelle.
Eagle Scout
John Nolan, a junior at St. Xavier High School, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Nolan, a member of Troop 321 at the Middletown United Methodist Church, completed various projects at the Golden Arrow Center for Mothers and Children, 644 S. Shelby Street. In addition to assembling Easter baskets for the children at the center, Nolan and his troop also made rolling laundry carts and organized clothing at the center. Nolan attends St. Martin of Tours Church.
Journalism award
- The Rosecast, the Assumption High School yearbook, recently received the following awards from the Kentucky High School Journalism Association: First place honors in overall coverage, overall yearbook design, theme development and use of graphics; second place honors in general excellence and writing style; and third place honors in yearbook photography and cover design.
- Trinity High School’s student newspaper, The Echo, earned five awards from the Kentucky High School Journalism Association contest. Mike Wagner won first place in sports writing. Wagner also won second place in news writing. Logan Proffitt placed second in reviews; Pierce Abernathy won third place in photography; and Jack French placed third in editorial cartoons.Additionally, Trinity’s broadcast journalism class won the following awards at the contest: Jonathan Dunn placed first in news package. Dodge Fielden won first place in voice over. Ross Troop place second in news feature package. Chase Nalley placed second in voice over. Luis Corrons came in third in spot production. And, Marcus Dorsey won third place in music video/short video.
Governor’s scholar
Alex Ozier member of St. Margaret Mary Church and a junior at Eastern High School, was selected for the Governor’s Scholars Program. Ozier was also selected for the Tourism Honors Academy which includes a 10-day residential session at Bellarmine University.
Essay winners
Emily Johnson, a junior at Holy Angels Academy, won first place in the Kentucky Right to Life Essay Contest in the 11th- and 12th-grade division. Johnson also won the Kentucky Right to Life Regional Oratorical Contest and is the Kentucky state runner-up in the same contest.
Catherine Heuser, also a junior at Holy Angels Academy, placed second in the Kentucky Right to Life Essay Contest in the 11th- and 12th-grade division.
Nate Johnson, a freshman at Holy Angels Academy, won first place in the Kentucky Right to Life Essay Contest in the ninth- and 10th-grade division. Christopher Kenney, also a freshman at Holy Angels, won second place in the same category.
