Geography Bee
Alex Doucette, an eighth-grader at St. Nicholas Academy, is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2014 Kentucky State Geography Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Historical Society, Google and Plum Creek. This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, now in its 26th year.
Students in grades four to eight competed in geography contests that were held at schools throughout Kentucky. School level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The society invited the students who had the top 100 scores in each of the fifty states to compete.
The 2014 Kentucky State Geographic Bee will be held at the Knicely Conference Center at Western Kentucky University April 4.
Philanthropy
Six Assumption High School students who served on the 2013-2014 Louisville Youth Philanthropy Council were recognized at a banquet March 11 at Big Spring Country Club. The students were Kelly Brinkman, Mackenzie Kronk, Alex Raver, Erin Raque, Morgan Schweitzer and Grace Tarter.
The Louisville Youth Philanthropy Council is a non-profit organization that teaches high school students how to raise grant money, raise funds and network with leaders in the community.
‘Best band’
The Trinity High School Drum Line won its third consecutive and fourth overall trophy for being the “Best Band” in the annual St. Patrick’s Parade, which was held March 15 on Baxter Avenue. The parade is organized by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish-Catholic fraternal organization.
Speech tourney
The Trinity High School speech and debate team competed in the Kentucky High School Speech League State Tournament on March 15 at the University of Kentucky. Jorge Rojas-Ortega advanced to the quarterfinal round of varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate and was named Best Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Speaker for the tournament.
Debate contest
The Assumption High School Speech and Debate team competed in and hosted the Wilson Wyatt Debate League Grand Championship tournament March 8.
In the public forum competition, the team of Eliza Devlin and Raegan Davis won the varsity championship, while the team of Kailyn Deitz and Grace Gardone won the junior varsity championship. Angela Tran and Molly Livingston took third in junior varsity contest.
Raegan Davis was the top varsity speaker and Eliza Devlin finished second. In junior varsity, Deitz was the top speaker and Brigit Gillespie earned third place.
Devlin, Deitz, Gardone and Tran all received scholarships from the league to attend debate camp this summer.
KUNA honors
Trinity High School’s delegation to the Kentucky United Nations Assembly received top honors at the recent conference held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel March 9 to 11.
Proposals were written by Marck Kiselevach, Patrick McGlaun, Jordan Light and Ryan Logue (representing Jamaica); John Paul Dyar, Peter Senn, Thomas Mosher and Ryan Bruns (representing Kazakhstan); and Andrew Ely, Nolan Romines and Holden Turney (representing Somalia) as if they passed through the UN summit meetings.
Individual students earning awards were: Phillip Sandman (Outstanding Parliamentarian) and Eric Elder (Outstanding Speaker).
Trinity’s delegation also was awarded the Outstanding Statesmanship trophy.
Girl Scout award
Fourth-grade Girl Scouts from Troop 993 at Holy Trinity Church earned their Junior Aide Award last week during a ceremony at the school. The Junior Aide Award is earned by a Junior troop when they make and complete a plan to guide a younger troop through a Girl Scout Leadership Journey, a news release from the school said.
The Holy Trinity’s fourth-grade troop selected the school’s first-grade Daisy Troop 1265 to assist. The theme of the project was called “It’s Your Planet — Love it!”
The Juniors taught the Daisies more about the natural world around them and how to protect it. The girls began their journey together in November and completed it in March.
