St. Leonard School kicked off a new program for students called Rise to Run & Wake to Walk.
The fitness program, led by physical education teacher Anthony Gunn, aims to encourage physical activity and exercise among the entire student body, a news release from the school said.

Gunn will invite students to arrive at school each Tuesday morning at 7:20 a.m. to walk or run in the school gym for 30 minutes prior to the start of school. Students who participate will receive a special bracelet and will earn a bead for their bracelet each Tuesday they participate.

The Tuesday fitness sessions began Oct. 15 and will continue while school is in session until May 13, 2014.

Magazine drive

Students at St. Gabriel the Archangel School recently participated in a magazine drive to help raise funds for the school and to help less fortunate children.

The Great American Magazine Company and the Save the Children Foundation partnered together to send live baby chicks to families in third-world countries, a news release from the school said.

The chicks are purchased when a certain number of magazine subscriptions are sold by the students.

“Once the chicks are grown, they will provide eggs for the children to eat so they can grow up healthy and strong,” the release said.

The students at St. Gabriel were able to contribute 77 chicks to the project.

The money raised will go toward technology enhancements and various other improvements for the school.
