Tutoring program

The Catholic Enrichment Center will offer after-school tutoring for students in grades kindergarten to 12. The sessions will be held Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. starting  Sept. 9 at the center at 3146 West Broadway.

The content areas which will be focused on are math, English, reading, science and assistance with homework assignments. Healthy snacks also will be provided.

The cost is $10 per month. Call 776-0262 for more information or to register.

ACT/SAT prep

The Office of Multicultural Ministry’s Catholic Enrichment Center will offer ACT/SAT preparation sessions on Saturdays from Sept. 14 to Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon. The sessions will be held at the center at 3146 West Broadway. The cost is $25.

Scholar fest

Assumption High School will host its second annual Scholar Fest Symposium Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Humana Foundation Performing and Fine Arts Center at 2170 Tyler Lane. The symposium’s theme is “The Search for Global Harmony.”

A news release from the school noted that seven students from Assumption have been involved in the independent research project. Each student has worked with a teacher advisor, a community mentor and the project’s director to complete research on a selected topic of interest, the release said. Each student’s work will culminate with the publication of a high school thesis and presentation at the symposium.

Topics of the symposium will include:

  • “Food Justice: Problems and Solutions Regarding Food Deserts in Louisville”
  • “Praying for Change: Women’s Role in Religion”
  • “Animal Consciousness and Self-Awareness”
  • “Synesthesia: A Connected Reality”
  • “Helping One Woman Can Change the World”
  • “The Universal Communion: Rekindling Our Connection to the Earth Through Food”
  • “The Nonviolence Philosophy: Origin, Utilization and Application”

Eagle Scout

Geordie Ayers, a senior at Trinity High School, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Ayers is a member of Boy Scout Troop 325 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

For his Eagle Scout project Ayers repaired erosion and graded an 800-foot trail at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. He also implemented a trail maintenance guide for all Kentucky state parks.

William Tobbe, a senior at St. Xavier High School, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Tobbe is a member of Troop 346 of St. Gabriel the Archangel Church.

For his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, Tobbe completed two projects at the nature play area at Jefferson Memorial Forest. He landscaped the boundaries of the area with plants native to Kentucky including winterberries and St. John’s Wort. Additionally, Tobbe also constructed a cedar boundary along the sidewalk to contain the mulch and an entryway.
