Flaget Trail
More than 300 boy scouts, cub scouts, venture scouts, girl scouts, American Heritage Girls and adult leaders participated in the 67th Annual Bishop Flaget Trail Aug. 17. About 200 scouts camped on the property of St. Thomas Church in Bardstown, Ky., the night before the trail, which was hosted by the Catholic Committee on Scouting. An additional 100 scouts joined the group for the events on Saturday.
The trail included visits to St. Thomas Church, St. Thomas Cemetery, Bishop Flaget’s log house and the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral.
The scouts and leaders were able to participate in rosary making, a rosary recitation and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Father Jeff Gatlin, the chaplain for the Catholic Committee on Scouting, presided at a Mass for the group.
Also taking part in the annual Flaget Trail were scouts from the diocese of Owensboro and Lexington.
Volleyball honors
Assumption High School juniors Kenzie Maloney and Molly Sauer were part of the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Volleyball Team that won silver in the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship in Nakhton Ratchisima, Thailand. Maloney and Sauer are the two liberos on the 12 member team and the only athletes from Kentucky selected for the team. This is the first USA volleyball team of either gender to win a world championship medal at the youth or junior level.
Eagle Scouts
Trinity High School sophomore Mason Daly and 2013 graduate Cullen Bilyeu recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
Daly is a member of Troop 8 at Hurstbourne Christian Church. For his Eagle Scout Service Leadership Project, Daly did a landscaping project for Greenhill Therapy, a nonprofit organization that works with special-needs children, a news release from the schools said. He built drainage ditches to prevent flooding, spread two tons of limestone gravel for paths, removed rocks from the pastures and reused the rocks to line the paths, and painted gates and a storage shed.
Bilyeu is a member of Troop 243 at St. Barnabas Church. For his Eagle Scout project, he remodeled and restored a garage building at St. Barnabas. The structure is approximately 25 feet deep by 70 feet wide and has six garage bays, the release said. The scope of work included new aluminum garage doors with a custom track, caulking and weather-proofing, and new paint, trim, seamless gutters, attic vents and siding.
