Environmental award
Several students who attend schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville won awards at the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District Awards and Recognition Ceremony on April 16. In the conservation writing category Eric Schoen of Trinity High School won second place and Morgan Porter of Holy Family School placed third.
Jennifer Shishmanian of Sacred Heart Model School won first place in the conservation art category.
Caroline Bosler of St. Francis of Assisi School placed second in the Louisville Regional Science Fair.
Heather Hunt, a teacher at Sacred Heart Model School received an environmental education grant.
History day
Eleven Mercy Academy students recently competed in the National History Day state competition. Five of them advanced to the national competition, which will be held in Maryland this summer.
Casey McMahan and Peggy Schnell placed first in the group exhibit. Kassidy Keisel placed first and Mary Robinson placed second in the individual exhibit category. Katie Henning placed second in the research paper category.
Of the 18 projects representing Kentucky, four are from Mercy students.
Journalism award
Trinity High School’s online newspaper, The ECHO, finished in third place in the general excellence cumulative points category in the Kentucky High School Journalism Association competition.
Jake Smith placed first in sports writing, Philip Truman placed first in feature writing and Chris Pfeiffer placed first in photography. Claiming second-place finishes were Smith (news writing), John Cerjak (sports writing) and Pfeiffer (photography).
The Shamrock yearbook finished third in the graphics category.
Engineering club
Three members of Trinity High School’s ACE Club will be awarded scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to the college of their choice from ACE Mentor Louisville, Inc. The students are John Bindner, Matthew Heutz and Mitch Sirianno. “ACE” stands for Architecture Construction Engineering and is for students who are interested in a career in one or all of those areas, a news release from the school said.
Media grant
Mercy Academy has been selected by the Margaret Hall Foundation as the recipient of a $7,000 grant. According to a news release from the school, the money will be used to fund the transformation of the current library/media center into “a space that will compliment the total conversion to iPads by the school during the 2012-2013 school year.”
Merit scholars
Two additional high school seniors in Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville have received scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They are: Jackson Bowers of St. Xavier High School and Stephanie Campbell of Assumption High School.
Scholar program
Two additional students have been named to the 2013 Governor’s Scholar Program.
Trinity High School junior Braden Lauer and William Evan Nixon, a graduate of St. Raphael School and a junior at duPont Manual High School, will participate in the summer program.
Blood drive
Trinity High School will host a blood drive at the school’s Steinhauser Gymnasium May 22 at 8 a.m. Donors 16 years or younger must have a parent sign a permission form.
