Refugee program

Last week students at Holy Cross High School heard personal accounts of “survival and struggle” from 14 refugee clients of Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services program.

The event was part of the  Parishes Organized to Welcome Refugees (POWR) program. The Feb. 27 talk was the fourth educational outreach program this school year that Holy Cross has hosted in partnership with Catholic Charities.

The refugees who spoke to the Holy Cross students were from Afghanistan, Bhutan/Nepal, Cuba, Congo, Burundi, Iraq, Somalia and Sudan.
Part of the program included a question and answer period.

Theater

St. Xavier High School will present “Godspell” for its Spring musical. Performances will be March 16, 21, 22 and 23 at 7 p.m. and at 2 p.m. on March 17 and 23. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. They can be purchased online at www.saintx.com/drama. For more information, call Mike Reynolds at 637-4712, ext. 599.

State champs

St. Xavier High School won it’s 25th consecutive state swimming and diving championship, and Sacred Heart Academy’s swimming and diving team won its 24th state title at the state meet held Feb. 22 and 23 at the University of Louisville. Sacred Heart’s team also tied a school record by winning eight events. The team was honored with a school-wide pep rally on Feb. 25.

The St. X Tiger swimmers won two relay events while Mitchell Forde won the 100-yard freestyle and Robert Leasure the 200 individual medley.

Eagle Scout

Zachary Yates of St. Barnabas Church’s Boy Scout Troop 243 has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. For his project, Yates cleaned and painted St. Barnabas’ Gallager Hall and built a coat rack, with the help of friends, family and parishioners.

Educational trip

DeSales High School junior Ethan Zeller has been selected to participate in the Ida and Bernhard Behr Holocaust Memorial Education Trip. Zeller’s essay was chosen as a winner to receive an all-expense paid trip to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. The contest was funded by the Jewish Community Center.

Concert

The Presentation Academy choir, the Prezettes, will be in concert with the St. Mary’s College Women’s Choir of Notre Dame, Ind., March 10 at Holy Spirit Church, 3345 Lexington Rd. The concert will begin at 5 p.m.
