‘Outstanding’ volunteer

St. Raphael School fifth-grader Madison Roy is one of two students in Kentucky selected to receive a Prudential Spirit of Community Award, a nationwide program that honors young people who do “outstanding acts of volunteerism,” according to a release from Prudential Financial.

Madison has raised more than $9,000 to help people suffering from leukemia and sickle cell anemia through the sale of two books she wrote with her brother: “Flower: A girl with Leukemia” and “Petethra’s Secret.”

Madison also raises money by taking part in walkathons and collecting aluminum cans. The other winner from Kentucky is Virginia Newsome, 17, of Lexington. They will receive $1,000, a silver medallion and an expense-paid trip of four days to Washington, D.C.
