St. Francis of Assisi students Sam Belza, Luca Sanchez, both seventh-graders, and eighth-grade students Christine Lipscomb, Cassie Drury and Sarah Santry earned perfect scores recently in the first of three competitions for the WordMasters Challenge. It is a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students.
Nationally, only 23 seventh-graders and 28 eighth-graders achieved a perfect score. Other St. Francis of Assisi students who scored highly in the first meet were fifth-graders Ellie Hummel and Jack Calvery; sixth-grader Ellie Dunham; seventh-graders Conner Lynn and Lauryn Grady and eighth-graders Holly Zoeller and Lindsay Haffner.
The students were coached in the WordMasters Challenge by Pamela Conway and Judy Bolduc.
Quick recall
St. Xavier High School’s Quick Recall varsity and junior varsity teams recently finished their regular season competitions without losing a single match. The teams also won their league tournaments. The varsity team defeated Trinity High School for their tournament championship, and the junior varsity team defeated St. Francis High School for its title. The members of the varsity team, all juniors and seniors, are:

Youth delegate
Trinity High School junior Geordie Ayers has been selected as a national youth delegate for the 2013 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University. The event will be held June 23-28 at the university in Washington, D. C., and will involve a week-long study of leadership issues in environmental science and conservation.
Literary lauds
Mercy Academy’s creative writing students and their literary magazine called “Literally Mercy” received the highest ranking of superior from the National Council of Teachers of English. Mercy and Covington Catholic High School were the only schools in Kentucky to receive this ranking, according to a press release from Mercy.
Plays on bullying
Assumption High School’s BLOOM Theatre Project, which focuses on social justice, will present “The Bully Plays,” a series of five 10-minute productions that focus on such characters as a self-centered prince and a young girl battling the expectations of other people.
The cast will perform the show at six Catholic elementary schools in late February.
Public performances will be Feb. 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. in Assumption’s Humana Foundation Performing and Fine Arts Center, 2170 Tyler Lane. Admission is free and intended as a gift to the community. Free tickets may be reserved online at www.ahsrockets.org or by calling 458-2636.
