Dinner with the archbishop

The Archdiocese of Louisville Vocation Office will host a dinner with Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz Sept. 14 for all students in grades six through 12. The event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 5505 Bardstown Road. Inspirational speaker and musician Cooper Ray will lead the evening’s program, which has the theme “Bringing Christ to Others.”

Essay winner

Angelia Herrera, a fourth-grader at St. Gabriel School, was among the winners of the United States Tennis Association’s 14th annual USTA/NJTL Arthur Ashe Essay and Art Contest.
Herrera will receive round-trip airfare to New York City, along with a parent or guardian, and a two-night stay at the Grand Hyatt 42nd Street. In New York she will attend the Arthur Ashe Kids Day celebration.
For the contest, Herrera was asked to create an essay or art that addressed the question “If Arthur Ashe were alive today, what do you think would give him hope?”
Ashe was a former professional tennis player and the first African American player ever selected to the United States David Cup team.

Fall play

St. Xavier High School’s Drama Department will present Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” All performances will be held in the school’s Brown-Forman Cultural Arts Center. Show dates and times are as follows: Sept. 15, 19, 20 and 22 at 7 p.m.; and Sept. 16 and 22 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, children and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased online at www.saintx.com/drama or at the box office one hour prior to the show.

Eagle Scout

Trinity High School sophomore Ryan Logue was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a ceremony Aug. 6.
For his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, Logue installed commercial vinyl tile flooring in three rooms (approximately 550 square feet) at the Humane Society of Oldham County in LaGrange, Ky. Logue is a member of Boy Scout Troop 109.
