Maggie Heine, a 2012 graduate of duPont Manual High School and a member of St. Frances of Rome Church, has been invited to participate in the Brown Fellows Program Class of 2012-2016. Heine will join 19 other incoming college freshmen chosen for this individualized development program.
According to a news release from the James Graham Brown Foundation, the Brown Fellows are a group of diverse, high achieving undergraduate students who build leadership skills and a global perspective through the program. This year’s class is comprised of students from seven states and two countries. Brown Fellows are selected based on scholastic attainment, intellectual leadership, visionary thinking and exemplary community involvement, the release said.
The Brown Fellows program is a partnership between Centre College and the University of Louisville. Brown Fellows receive full tuition, room and board, funding for three enrichment experiences and international travel as a group before their freshman year.
In July, Heine and other members of this year’s incoming class will travel to Istanbul, Turkey, and surrounding areas to study the economic, cultural and historic aspects of the country. Heine will attend Centre College and join a community of 80 Brown Fellows, split evenly between the campuses.
From June 15 to 18, St. Xavier High School students and chaperones participated in a mission trip to Auxier, Ky., (located between Prestonsburg and Paintsville).
The service opportunity was sponsored by Hand-in-Hand Ministries and coordinated through St. X’s Campus Ministry Department. A team of 11 students and four adults gutted and replaced the flooring for one trailer home and connected the plumbing for two other homes.
The student volunteers were: Lucas Baker, Sam Bibelhauser, Joe Bousamra, Zach Flynn, Joseph Kitchen, Will Marx, Bailey McIntosh, Connor Pavon, Seiler Smith, Joe Vonderheide and T.J. Vonderheide. Adult volunteers were parents, Duffy Baker and Mary Bousamra, as well as two staff members, Alan Huelsman and Larry Johnson.
