Kids Called to Serve
Students at St. Gabriel School recently participated in a community cleanup project April 26 through a new parish program called “Kids Called to Serve.”
The organization, started by St. Gabriel Church parishioners Michelle Sherrard and Karla Murphy, aims to foster activities “to build friendship and foster a love of philanthropy” for children in kindergarten through eighth-grade, a news release from the parish said.
The children partnered with representatives from Brightside to clean up the St. Gabriel campus.
Scholars program
- Eight Trinity High School juniors were selected to participate in the 2015 Governor’s Scholars Program.
They are: Braden Barnett, Jeremy Borden, Elijah Donohue, Evan Grimm, Andrew Letterle, Timothy Raque, Philip Sandman and Henry Snyder. - Eight Mercy Academy juniors have also been selected to participate in the 2015 Governor’s Scholars Program.
They are: Ailiyah Alim, Candace Cox, Ashley Cravens, Amanda Greenwell, Jade Hagan, Olivia Hennis, Alison Terrell and Amber Willett. - Fourteen St. Xavier High School juniors have also been selected to participate in the 2015 Governor’s Scholars Program.
They are: John Wahlstedt, Jackson Smith, Eric Bush, Zachary Schuhmann, Daniel Ryan, Thomas Ostertag, Nolan Lawson, Paul Loheide, Chase Mattingly, Oliver Hirn, Jackson Keadle, Eric Wahlstedt, Peary Farrar and Liam Crooks.
Scholarship
Matthew Thomison, a senior at Trinity High School, was one of only seven students nationwide to be named a Gordon A. Rich Memorial Foundation Scholar.
The foundation was established to award college scholarships to qualified high school students whose parents or guardians work in the financial services industry. Thomison is the first student ever chosen from Kentucky to receive the scholarship.
He plans to attend the University of Kentucky and study mechanical engineering.
Food drive
Holy Spirit School’s National Junior Honor Society sponsored several Lenten service projects at the school. The leadership group hosted a food drive and penny challenge in which they collected 22 boxes of food and $2,364.79. All food and money were donated to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
As part of Mayor Greg Fischer’s “Give a Day” service program, the group sponsored a T-shirt clothing drive on April 24. All of the new or gently used T-shirts will be donated to Catholic Charities.
Book bee
Winners in grades 4, 5, 6, and junior high were named in the 2015 Archdiocese of Louisville Book Bee. Three hundred and fifty-two students from 20 schools participated. The winners are:
Fourth-grade — Our Lady of Lourdes School, first place; St. Mary Academy, second place; and St. Dominic School in Springfield, Ky., third place.
Fifth-grade — Sacred Heart Model School, first; Holy Trinity School, second; and St. Mary, third.
Sixth-grade — St. James School in Elizabethtown, Ky., first; Sacred Heart Model, second; and St. Michael, School, third.
Junior high — St. James, Elizabethtown, first; Our Lady of Lourdes, second; and St. Michael, third.
Nature camp
The Passionist Earth & Spirit Center, 1924 Newburg Road, will offer “Camp Nature Odyssey: Adventure in Earth & Spirit,” a summer day camp for kids June 15-19 and June 22-26. Half or full days are available. For more information and to register, email info@earthandspiritcenter.org or call 452-2749.
Merit scholars
Two high school students who attend schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville were named Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Michael Turner, a St. Xavier High School senior, has been selected to receive the National Merit James E. Casey Scholarship sponsored by the UPS Foundation. He plans to study electrical engineering.
Daniel McCarthy, a senior at Trinity High School, has been selected to receive the National Merit PPG Industries Foundation Community Scholarship, sponsored by PPG Industries. He plans to study psychology.
Choir auditions
Open auditions for the Louisville Youth Choir’s 49th season will be held April 28 to May 5 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Sacred Heart School for the Arts, Angela Hall, building 17 on the Ursuline Campus, 3105 Lexington Road. ‘Give a Day’
Students at St. Stephen Martyr School participated in Mayor Greg Fischer’s “Give a Day” week of service. They assembled nearly 300 care packages containing hard candy, tissues, hand sanitizer, salty snacks and prayer cards for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatments. Twelve student ambassadors presented the donations on April 29 to patients at Consultants in Blood Disorders and Cancer on Kresge Way.
House page
Tamron Keith, a sophomore at Trinity High School, served as a page for a day with the Indiana House of Representatives on April 13. In addition to his page duties, Keith had the opportunity to tour the capitol, witness a legislative session and speak with Rep. Steve Stemler.
