Scholastic art award
Numerous students who attend schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville have been selected as Scholastic Art Award recipients in the Regional Scholastic Art Awards contest. The artists will be recognized along with other regional winners at an awards ceremony today, Feb. 12.
Sacred Heart Academy — Gold key winners: Sarah Hammond and Emma Kaufman; Silver key winners: Mary Alyce Furlong, Sarah Hammond, Emma Kaufman and Maria Serrano.
St. Xavier High School — Gold key winners: Josh Brodzik, Victor Burklow, Jacob Crider and Luke Harwell; Silver key winners: Josh Brodzik, Victor Burklow, Klayton Grimes, Clint Hoehler and George McCracken.
Assumption High School — Gold key winners: Erin Raque; Silver key winners: Audrey Speedy and Faith Rawlings.
Works of art by gold key winners are automatically entered into the national competition and will be on display at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. Silver key works of art will be on display at Gheens Academy.
Coloring contest
Children in kindergarten to fourth-grade are invited to enter the annual St. Patrick Coloring Contest, sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Entry forms will be sent to all area Catholic elementary schools. Forms also will be available at https://www.LouisvilleIrish.com and at all branches of King Southern Bank.
Three winners will be chosen from each grade in addition to one grand prize winner. All winners will receive their framed entry and a T-shirt and will be invited to participate in the Ancient Order of Hibernians’ St. Patrick’s Parade March 14 along the Baxter Avenue/Bardstown Road corridor. The grand-prize winner and winners from each grade will be honored at a Mass March 14 at St. Louis Bertrand Church, 1104 South 6th St.
Letters of intent
Two seniors at Trinity High School signed national letters of intent to participate in college athletics during ceremonies last week.
Sam Stockton will play soccer for Indiana University. Ryan Gustafson will play ice hockey for Eastern Kentucky University.
Science fair
The Office of Multicultural Ministry (OMM) will host a Community Science Fair March 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Catholic Enrichment Center (CEC), 3146 West Broadway.
Students in grades five to 12 are invited to participate in the community-wide event and are encouraged to create and “showcase projects representing all science disciplines including, but not limited to, physical, natural, biological and space,” a news release from OMM said.
Registration is required and the deadline is March 6. There is a $10 fee per entry. For more details or to register, call OMM at 471-2123. Registration forms and requirements can also be obtained at the CEC.
Service award
Four Sacred Heart Academy juniors have received national Ursuline Education Services (UES) 2014 Service Awards from the organization’s board of trustees. The UES fosters collaboration among Ursuline schools in the United States and Canada.
Emily Easterling is a tutor at Adelante. Abbi Haering volunteers with Habitat for Humanity. Carolle Siegel volunteers at a number of schools, including Sacred Heart Preschool. And, Kelly Teta assists residents at Oaklawn Nursing Home. The students were honored along with young women and men from 15 other
Ursuline sponsored and affiliated schools and colleges across the U.S.
Penny challenge
Students at St. Michael School raised $3,850 in one week for the Home of the Innocents.
The effort was part of the school’s penny challenge hosted during Catholic Schools Week Jan. 25 to 31.
