Xaverian Brother John F. O’Brien dies

Brother-John-O-BrienXaverian Brother John F. O’Brien, “Brother Brice,” died Nov. 6 at the University of Louisville Hospital. He was 89 and had been a Xaverian Brother for 71 years.

Brother O’Brien, who grew up in Worcester, Mass., taught in the Archdiocese of Louisville at Flaget High School and had been in residence at Ryken House on the campus of St. Xavier High School when he died. He also taught at schools in Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey. He later served as archivist and then vice-chancellor of the Diocese of Monterey in California.

He is survived by his sisters, Kathleen Kirby of Sun City, Fla., and Margaret Lynch of Shrewsbury, Mass., and nieces and nephews

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3 p.m. on Nov. 16 in the Chapel of Saint John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, Mass., with burial in the Xaverian Brothers Cemetery.
