Xaverian Brother Nivard Scheel dies at 90

Xaverian Brother Nivard (Gerard John) Scheel died on May 1 at Nazareth Home. He was 90 and in his 73rd year of religious life.

Brother Scheel, a native of Baltimore, taught high school for four years, including 1956 to 1958 when he taught at St. Xavier High School. He taught for nearly 40 years at the college level, including at Xaverian College, Catholic University and Trinity College in Washington, D.C.

He also served as president of Xaverian College, acting president of Catholic University briefly, superior of the Xaverian College community and chair of the St. Xavier High School Board.

He is survived by his nephew, Dr. Paul Scheel; niece, Mary Claire Schmidt; sister-in-law Beverly Scheel and their families.

He donated his body to the University of Louisville Medical School. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in the St. Xavier High School Chapel, 1609 Poplar Level Road, May 12, at 9:30 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ryken House, a Louisville retirement community for the Xaverian Brothers, 1607 Poplar Level Road, Louisville, Ky., 40217.
