Ursuline Sister of Louisville Patricia (Marcian) Lowman, a former Bellarmine University professor, died May 3 at Sacred Heart Home. She was 94 and had been an Ursuline Sister for 76 years.
Sister Lowman, a native of South Carolina, served as an educator in South Carolina, Nebraska and Kentucky. In Kentucky, she taught at St. Rita School from 1942 to 1946. Sister Lowman taught at Sacred Heart Academy from 1958 to 1965.
She taught at Ursuline College from 1965 to 1968, when Ursuline and Bellarmine College merged and later became known as Bellarmine University. She served as a professor of history at Bellarmine until she retired in 1996.
While at Bellarmine, she was named outstanding professor of the year on three occasions, served as Bellarmine’s women’s basketball official scorekeeper for 25 years and was inducted into the Bellarmine University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. She also accompanied Bellarmine students on tours of Europe and the Middle East.
Sister Lowman is survived by her niece, Carol Tessem of St. Petersburg, Fla., several great nieces and members of her community.
Visitation will be at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 3115 Lexington Road, on May 12 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. A vigil service will follow at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on May 13 at 11 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery.
