Ursuline Sister of Mount St. Joseph Philomena Cox dies at age 91

Ursuline Sister of Mount St. Joseph Philomena Cox died March 9 at Mount St. Joseph in Maple Mount, Ky. She was 91 and in her 72nd year of religious life.

Sister Cox, a native of Owensboro, Ky., was known as “Sister Phil.” She served as an educator for 29 years and then she served as director of building services at Brescia University in Owensboro from 1976 to 1991.

In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at St. Catherine School in New Haven, Ky., from 1947 to 1954 and was principal there from 1959 to 1962. She also served as a teacher at the old St. Charles School in Lebanon, Ky., from 1955 to 1956; as principal of the old St. Bernard School in Clementsville, Ky., from 1954 to 1955; and as teacher and principal at the old St. Columba School from 1969 to 1976.

She is survived by a brother-in-law, a niece and members of her religious community.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. March 14 at Mount St. Joseph. Visitation will be March 13 at 4 p.m. at Mount St. Joseph, with a wake service at 6:30 p.m.
