Ursuline Sister Mary Catherine Vukmanic dies at age 95

OSU-obituaries-wUrsuline Sister of Louisville Mary Catherine Vukmanic, a writer and teacher, died Nov. 22 at Mercy Sacred Heart. She was 95.

Sister Vukmanic, a native of Pittsburgh, entered the Ursuline Sisters of Pittsburgh in 1936. In 1958, her congregation — which dated to 1870 — merged with the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville. She is the last of the Ursuline Sisters of Pittsburgh.

She taught at Ursuline Academy in Pittsburgh (which closed in 1981) from 1942 to 1958, at Ursuline College in Maryland from 1962 to 1966 and at Sacred Heart Academy from 1958 to 1962. She also taught at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh in the 1950s; at Ursuline College in Louisville in the 1960s; at St. Mary’s Seminary-College of Theology in South Union; and St. Catharine College in Springfield, Ky.

Sister Vukmanic also served at parishes around Kentucky. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she served at St. Augustine Church in Lebanon, Ky., and also was the rural religious education consultant for the archdiocese from 1991 to 1993.

She was a guest lecturer and writer who published more than 200 poems in various periodicals and she was a book review editor for the Catholic Home Journal from 1949 to 1959.

She is survived by her brother Walter Vukmanic of Harmony, Penn., nieces and nephews and her Ursuline community.

Visitation will be at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 3115 Lexington Road, on Nov. 25 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A vigil service begins at 7 p.m.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Nov. 26 at 11 a.m. in the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel with burial in Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
