Ursuline Sister Eileen Carney dies at age 81

Ursuline Sister of Louisville (Alice Marie) Eileen Carney died June 4 at the Ursuline Motherhouse. She was 81 and had been an Ursuline Sister since 1951.

Sister Carney served primarily in education and pastoral care in Kentucky, Nebraska, New Mexico, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at St. Ann and St Peter schools in the mid 1950s. She also served as a teacher at Sacred Heart Academy from 1963 to 1968 and at Angela Merici High School from 1968 to 1971. She also served as principal of those high schools for one year each from 1970 to 1973. She also served in pastoral ministry at Marian Home on the Ursuline campus (from 1989 to 1998) and at Holy Spirit Church in Jamestown, Ky., where she was a pastoral associate.

Sister Carney is survived by her sisters Patricia Helmstetter and Mary Louise McGregor, both of LaVale, Md.; her brother, Father John Carney of Laurel, Md.; nieces and nephews; and the Ursuline community.

Visitation will be at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 3115 Lexington Road on June 7 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A vigil service will begin at 7 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on June 8 at 11 a.m. in the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery.
