Ursuline Sister of Louisville Denise Roberts died Jan. 20 at Mercy Sacred Heart. She was 93 and had been an Ursuline Sister since 1940.
Sister Roberts, a native of New Haven, Ky., served as a teacher of children and as a teacher, mentor and companion with adults who had special needs.
She served as a teacher in Kentucky, South Carolina and Maryland. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at St. Joseph, Our Mother of Sorrows and St. Ann schools. She also served on the faculty of what is now Pitt Academy in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.
Sister Roberts worked with the Council for Retarded Citizens of Jefferson County advocating for handicapped adults who wanted to live independently and lived with two such women as a mentor, companion and guide.
More recently, she served as a receptionist and volunteer on the Ursuline campus. She moved to Mercy Sacred Heart in 2010.
She is survived by a brother, Jack Roberts, sister Betty Roberts, nieces, nephews and her Ursuline community.
Visitation will be today from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. in the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel, 3105 Lexington Road. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery.
