Twelve Ursuline Sisters of Louisville celebrate jubilees

Twelve Ursuline Sisters of Louisville are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year, including Sister Shirley Ann Simmons, who is celebrating 75 years of religious life.

Sister Simmons, a native of Hartwell, Neb., joined the Ursulines in 1942. She earned degrees from Ursuline College, Creighton University and attended classes at the University of Notre Dame.

She taught at schools in Maryland, Nebraska and in the Archdiocese of Louisville. In 1999, she left teaching and began work as a pastoral minister at St. Luke Church in 2005.

Sister Simmons now resides at Nazareth Home-Clifton, where she enjoys music and serves in the ministry of presence and prayer.

70 years

Sister Antonine Biven, a native of Louisville, taught for 24 years in Kentucky, South Carolina and Mississippi. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she served as a music teacher at St. Francis of Assisi, St. Helen, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Therese, Sacred Heart Model and St. Raphael schools. She also served as a private music instructor, bandleader, parish music director and church organist through the years.

She spent 11 years as director of religious education, pastoral associate and music minister at St. Mary Church in Bullitt Co., then served at St. Helen and Our Lady of Lourdes churches.

Sister Biven volunteered at Project Women and the former Marian Home. She currently serves in the ministry of prayer and presence.

Sister Lorraine Maginot was raised in Calumet City, Ill., and taught in schools in Nebraska, Maryland, Massachusetts and Ohio. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at St. Joseph, St. Rita, Our Lady of Lourdes, Sacred Heart Model, St. Clement and Most Blessed Sacrament schools.

She also worked as a secretary in the Ursuline’s Office of Communications and her past volunteer ministries included sacristan, tutor, housekeeper and craft shop contributor.

Sister Maginot lives at the Ursuline Motherhouse and serves in the ministry of prayer and presence.

Sister Bernadine Nash, a native of Elizabethtown, Ky., was a teacher and principal for more than 34 years, serving at schools in Kentucky, Indiana and Nebraska.

Following her retirement, she served as coordinator at the Motherhouse, volunteer chaplain at Jewish Hospital and did volunteer work at the Marian Home and Elderserve.

Sister Nash resides at Nazareth Home-Clifton.

Sister Raymunda Orth, a native of Evansville, Ind., entered the Ursulines at the age of 17. She taught music and special education at schools for 30 years in Louisville and Indiana. She served as assistant director of finance for the Ursuline Sisters and as assistant principal/dean of students at Pitt Academy.

Following her retirement, she volunteered as a substitute teacher, served in the Angela Merici Center for Spirituality and was an organist at the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel. She now resides in the Nazareth Home-Clifton and offers prayers for poor souls as her vocation.

60 years

Sister Mary Lee Hansen served as a teacher in Kentucky, Nebraska, South Carolina and Pennsylvania.

She also served in Ursuline leadership for more than 30 years as director of communication and secretary for the Ursuline Montessori School and the Ursuline Administration Offices. Sister Hansen volunteered in the mailroom at Marian Home, the Ursuline Motherhouse and Nazareth Home-Clifton.

She resides at Nazareth Home-Clifton and enjoys calligraphy, drawing, watercolor and photography.

Sister Dolores Hudson taught at schools in Kentucky and Maryland, including St. Elizabeth and St. Helen schools.

Following her retirement from education, she volunteered at Open Hand Kitchen. Sister Hudson also served as coordinator of Retirement Success for Ursuline Sisters and coordinator at Marian Home and Ursuline Motherhouse.

She offers a ministry of prayer and presence at Nazareth Home-Clifton, where she resides.

Sister Jo Ann Jansing taught for 36 years, beginning her career at St. Ann School and Angela Merici High School. She later served as a professor at Mount St. Agnes College in Baltimore and later at Indiana University Southeast for 31 years, where she was head of the chemistry department and later chair of the natural sciences department.

She volunteers at Nativity Academy and Shively Area Ministries and currently serves on the Ursuline Leadership Board.

50 years

Sister Barbara Bir taught at St. Elizabeth and St. Jerome schools and later was principal at Our Mother of Sorrows and St. Martha schools.

She worked as personnel director for the Archdiocese of Louisville schools’ office and later became formation director for the Ursuline Sisters. She ministered for 10 years at Community Catholic Center in West Louisville.

Sister Bir currently tutors at Doors to Hope and serves as a spiritual director and retreat director. She is also a board member at Pitt Academy.

Sister Lynn Jarrell has served as a teacher in Germany, Maryland and Kentucky. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at Sacred Heart Academy.

Following her career in education, she earned a canon law degree and serves as a canonical consultant.

Sister Jarrell has been vice-president and president of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville and president of the Canon Law Society of America.

Sister Shannon Maguire taught in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at Angela Merici High School and served as a teacher and assistant principal/dean of students at Sacred Heart Academy.

Following her career in education, she served as house councilor and co-coordinator at the Ursuline Motherhouse.

She currently serves as the assistant to the finance director of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville.

10 years

Sister Katherine Corbett has worked as a registered nurse in the following capacities: hospital nursing, with the Department of Social Services, home health care; and long-term care at the former Marian Home.

She currently serves as healthcare director of the Ursuline Sisters and assesses and oversees the health care needs of the sisters.
