‘Turtle Derby’ will be held on April 27

Billed as the “slowest two minutes in sports,” the Little Sisters of the Poor annual Turtle Derby and Chicken Dinner features a day of turtle racing at the St. Joseph Home for the Aged, 15 Audubon Plaza Drive.

The family friendly event set for April 27 draws a crowd each year to bet on the turtles and cheer for the winners. It begins at noon and closes at 6 p.m.

Announcers for this year’s contests will be radio’s Tom Ulmer, who will call the races from noon to 2 p.m.; weatherman Reed Yadon, who will announce from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and auctioneer Steve Hale, who will call races from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The day also includes raffles, a bake sale, pull tabs, music and a silent auction, which closes at 5 p.m.

Dinners are $9 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
