Students win speech and debate titles

Assumption and Trinity high school students won debate championships recently.

  • Cooper Winrich, a senior at Trinity, won the district National Speech and Debate Association championship March 17 at Centre College.

Winrich will represent Kentucky at the national debate tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., this summer.

  • Lydia Cardwell, a junior at Assumption, won the state championship for the Lincoln Douglas Debate, part of the Kentucky Catholic Forensic League national qualifying tournament held recently at Larue County High School. Cardwell also won the state championship for the Lincoln Douglas Debate in the Kentucky High School Speech League tournament.

Cardwell and the Assumption debate team will move on to the Grand National Speech and Debate Tournament in Washington, D.C., at the end of May. The other members of the team are Carly Crawford, Correna Tate, Ella Springer and Meaghan Northup.
