Students win journalism awards from Western

Students from four high schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville won top awards in the Western Kentucky University Mark of Excellence Journalism contest.

  • Assumption High School’s newspaper, The Rosecall, won first place for best high school newspaper and first for best newspaper advertising. Assumption’s online publication, Rocket Launch, won second place for best multimedia production. Staff members who won first place are: Te’zha Jones for most valuable newspaper staffer and best column and review, Abby Spalding for best editorial cartoonist, Melissa Pickren for best news and feature photographer and Kay Nilest for best editorial writer. Second place went to Aly Beckham for best news writer. Molly O’Dea won third place for best sports writer and Claire Frisbie won third for best feature writer.
  • Members of Sacred Heart Academy’s The Rune also won awards in several categories. Megan Buechler placed first for best news writer and second place for best sports writer, Marie Kallis won first for best feature writer, Heather Gregory won first place for best sports writer, Carmen Miller won second place for best column and review, Jordyn Priest won second place for best feature writer and Madeline Kinser won third place for best news writer.
  • Trinity High School’s ECHO online newspaper staff won the following awards: Michael Webb, first place, best sports photographer; Ryan Cywinski, third place, best sports writer and best feature writer; and Forde Womack, second place, best news writer. Axel Halvarson won third place for best column and review.
  • Mercy Academy’s Mercy Paw Print online newspaper won third place for best high school news website.
