Spalding University awarded 586 undergraduate and graduate degrees at a commencement ceremony held at Canaan Christian Church, 2840 Hikes Lane, on June 6.

During the ceremony, Spalding’s Board of Trustees also honored three individuals who “have made significant contributions in their fields of service,” a news release from the school said.

“The recipients exemplify service, philanthropy, leadership and a dedication to the greater good,” the release said.
Benjamin K. Richmond, a civic leader and president of the Louisville Urban League, received a doctor of public service honorary degree.

Frank X. Walker, a former Kentucky poet laureate, received the doctor of humane letters honorary degree.

And, Silas House, an author and environmental advocate, was awarded Spalding’s highest honor, the Caritas Medal alumni award. Spalding presents the Caritas Medal to an alumnus who “within her or his community or on a national or international level, has made a significant contribution to the field and who lives out the university’s mission,” the release said.
