Sister Vivian Mary Sabelhaus, SCN, dies at 96

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Vivian Mary Sabelhaus, 96, died June 1 in Nazareth, Ky. She was a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 70 years.

Sister Sabelhaus, a native of Tell City, Ind., served in education, pastoral care, social work and for her religious community.

In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at St. Cecilia and St. Barnabas school in Louisville and St. Joseph School in Bardstown, Ky. From 1965 to 1971, she served at St. Monica parish in Bardstown as a social worker and teacher.

She also served in health care ministries in Lexington as a pastoral associate and at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville as sacristan.

From 1984 to 1989, Sister Sabelhaus served her SCN community as the Community Service Coordinator at Nazareth Home. For many years, she volunteered at the SCN Media Center and the Motherhouse Library.

Survivors include her sister Joan Conner of Tell City and brothers, Stephen Sabelhaus of Tell City; Patrick Sabelhaus of Sacramento, Calif.; and Dr. Jerome Sabelhaus of Port Orchard, Wash., her extended family and by religious community.

Sister Sabelhaus will be buried in the Nazareth Cemetery June 5 at noon. The prayer ritual will be filmed and shared. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.
