Sister Rita Spalding, an educator dies at 86

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Rita Spalding, formerly Sister Mary Aquin, died June 4 at Nazareth Home. She was 86 and had been a professed SCN for 61 years.
Sister Spalding a native of Lebanon, Ky., served as an educator in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee.
In Kentucky, she taught at Presentation Academy. She also served as principal at St. Mary of the Woods School in Whitesville, Ky.
Sister Spalding also served her community in Nazareth, Ky. She was as coordinator at the Motherhouse; from 2004 to 2016, she served as a volunteer in the Office of Mission Advancement; and she served as assistant director of Nazareth Village I and II from 1992 to 2000. She later served as a patient advocate at Memoral Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn.
She is survived by members of her extended family and her religious community.
A prayer service and visitation will be held at 1:30 p.m. June 6 in the chapel at Nazareth Home. A wake will be held that same day at 6:30 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Nazareth.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. June 7 at St. Vincent de Paul Church. Burial will be in Nazareth Cemetery.
