Sister of Mercy Catherine Marie Melton dies

Sister of Mercy Catherine Marie Melton (Mary Genesius) died Dec. 22 at St. Catherine Convent in Louisville. She was 97 and had been a Sister of Mercy for 80 years.

Sister Melton served as an educator in Ohio and Kentucky. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at Holy Cross, St. Paul, Our Lady, St. Mary Magdalen, St. Polycarp, and St. Athanasius schools. Also in the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at St. Aloysius School in Pewee Valley, Ky., and served as a principal and teacher at Immaculate Conception School in La Grange, Ky.

After she retired, Sister Melton served as a substitute teacher in Catholic schools and later ministered as a visitor to residents of Sacred Heart Home, Providence Home and Parkway Medical Center.

She is survived by her Mercy Sisters as well as many nieces and nephews and their families.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Dec. 28 at St. Raphael Church. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
