Sister of Charity of Nazareth Frances Rita Krumpelman (formerly Sister Maria Frances) died June 1 in Nazareth, Ky. She was 97 and had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 76 years.
Sister Krumpelman, a native of Louisville, made perpetual vows in 1953 and began serving as a teacher, first in Massachusetts and later in Memphis, the Diocese of Owensboro, Ky., and in the Archdiocese of Louisville at Most Blessed Sacrament School.
Earning a master’s degree in theology, she and a team of sisters established parish religious education based on the teachings of the Second Vatican Council. She offered faith formation and retreats for adults at Nazareth and then moved to the Diocese of Austin, Texas, where she served as the diocese’s director of religious education.
Sister Krumpelman also worked at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, where she assisted a professor with writing projects. She later wrote a history of St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Ky., founded by the SCNs in 1877. She served as an instructor at the Lexington Theological Seminary at the same time.
She also served as curator for Heritage Hall at Nazareth. And in 2011, she published a book of SCN history from 1912 to 1924, part of the series, “Impelled by the Love of Christ.”
She is survived by her extended family and the SCN Community.
The visitation will be held June 4 in St. Vincent de Paul Church in Nazareth with a wake at 6:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on June 5 at 10:30 a.m. in the church with burial in Nazareth Cemetery. The Mass will be live-streamed at nazareth.org/live.
